The candidate selected will serve as the Indiana State Department of Health
Medical Entomologist for the southern third of Indiana. Duties include
collecting and identifying mosquitoes as part of our statewide arbovirus
surveillance program, conducting field investigations in response to
vector-borne disease cases, acting as a liaison/consultant to local health
departments (LHD) in the region and conducting training sessions for LHD
personnel and pest management professionals. Additional outreach activities to
other state and federal agencies as well as the general public are also
required. The incumbent will serve as a subject matter expert in the areas of
biology of arthropod disease vectors, surveillance methodology and the proper
use of pesticides.
Extensive travel to the following counties is required during surveillance
season: Sullivan, Greene, Knox, Daviess, Martin, Gibson, Pike, Dubois, Posey,
Vanderburgh, Warrick, Spencer, Perry, Crawford, Orange, Harrison, Washington,
Floyd, Scott, Clark, Jefferson, Switzerland, Ohio, Dearborn, Ripley, Jennings,
Jackson and Lawrence.
Preferred Experience:
One (1) year full-time professional experience in arachnology, bacteriology,
biology, entomology, helminthology, nematology, parasitology, protozoology, or
zoology plus a bachelor's degree from an accredited university (concentration in
Arachnology, Bacteriology, Biology, Entomology, Environmental Health,
Helminthology, Nematology, Parasitology, Protozoology, Public Health, Virology,
or Zoology required).
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities strongly preferred:
The incumbent will have a strong base of knowledge in the areas of entomology,
biology, zoology, ecology, pesticide chemistry, vector-borne disease
transmission and environmental health. Experience in field research is highly
desirable. Ability to work with minimal supervision and function as part of a
cohesive team is required. Extensive travel is required during surveillance
season, therefore a valid driver's license and reliable transportation is a
must. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a desire to interact
with other public health professionals and the public are also necessary.
